Li-ion Battery: Separator Safety Testing
Preventing Internal Short Circuits
The separator film (PE/PP) is the last line of defense between the Anode and Cathode.
- Puncture Risk: Dendrite growth (lithium crystals) can pierce the separator, causing thermal runaway.
Mechanical Anisotropy (MD vs. TD)
Battery separators are often stretched during manufacturing, creating different strengths in the Machine Direction (MD) and Transverse Direction (TD).
- KHT Solution: The XLW Series allows for "Group Testing," enabling engineers to test MD and TD samples in one batch and automatically compare the tensile variance.
Puncture Test Standard
Using a standard 1mm diameter spherical probe (per ASTM D3763 or corporate standards), the machine measures the peak force required to penetrate the film at 50 mm/min. This simulates the slow growth of dendrites inside the cell.
